Sarah’s 18th Birthday Celebration

After a year of preparation and research, my sister celebrated her 18th birthday on Feb 28, 2009 at Ellas Banquet Hall in Toronto, Ontario.

For my sister’s debut, I was there not only as her sister but her event planner as well. My feet were sore at the end of the night but I had a lot of fun so did the guests.

I enjoy event planning. It started with an intimate at home event on my parent’s 25th anniversary, 5 years ago. We could not afford a lavish party so I opted to surprise them with a simple yet memorable evening. With very limited budget, I converted their bedroom into a romantic restaurant for two using available tools at their house and their children as waiters.

My philosophy as an event planner is to make the event as classy and enjoyable as possible by using resourcefulness and creativity. I believe in spending less money without compromising elegance and beauty. Because of this, all of the decor used for Sarah’s party were on sale or already available at home. For months, I scoured various stores for bargains especially during halloween. I went to craft stores and used coupons. I went to garage sales to buy candles. I bought flowers in bulk. I used my mom’s vases, furniture and cds.

Services were on a budget as well. Instead of hiring an expensive photographer, we were able to locate one that we can bargain with. We saved money on the cake by opting out of hand crafted sugar decor. Even my sister’s gown was a bargain but a lot of people thought it costs hundreds of dollars!

Plus, it does not hurt to ask family and close friends if they can help. And that’s just what I did. The worse that could have happen is they would have turned me down but of course they did not. They had decor items available that they willingly lent for the night and I asked if they can use their special talents and skills to assist with the production. For me, this is the best gift for a celebrant instead of the usual material or monetary gifts.

It was challenging to find alternatives but as long as the outcome was positive and the celebrant and guests had an unforgettable evening, the hard work and sleepless nights were worth it.

Theater, A Concert and Curling

We’ve been exploring Regina the past two weeks. It started on Valentines day when my husband got me tickets to Moonlight and Magnolias, a theater production by the Regina Little Theater. This was his Valentines day gift.

The play was about the creative team of Gone with the Wind. Here is the synopsis:

It’s 1939 and Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic movie, Gone with the Wind, a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel. The screenplay, you see, just doesn’t work. So what’s an all-powerful movie mogul to do? While fending off the film’s stars, gossip columnists and his own father-in-law, Selznick sends a car for famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and pulls formidable director Victor Fleming from the set of The Wizard of Oz. Summoning both to his office, he locks the doors, closes the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men labour over five days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time.

Its amazing how a play with three people trapped in a room can be very entertaining. There was a lot of physical comedy and witty banter. I specially liked the part where the director and the producer were depicting a famous scene where Scarlett’s friend Melanie was giving birth.

My valentines gift to my husband was also a pair of theater tickets. I was surprised at how affordable theater tickets are in Regina compared to Toronto so I did not hesitate to buy tickets instead of a material gift. The show was called The Decadent Flip Mod. It was part of the Sandbox series of the Globe Theater in Downtown Regina. The story was set in the sixties with three siblings as the main characters. Below is the synopsis:

Harper, Marybelle and Bianca are siblings living in London, England, 1965. They are impeccably groomed, well-mannered and stylish. They also happen to be bloodthirsty assassins, sworn to defend mother Britain. Learning of a plot to assassinate the Queen, the fierce trio embarks on a mission filled with love, betrayal, ultra-violence and spectacular hats.

The Decadent Flip Mod was the first show that I watched that was very intimate. There were only 40 people in the room and we were 3 feet away from the stage. No need for mics in this production because the room was so small. It was also the first show where I noticed actors making mistakes in their lines. It was not that bad but it was noticeable. The show was very colourful and creative but I prefer Moonlight and Magnolias.

Then we watched curling on Feb 16. Coke was a sponsor of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. This tournament is the Canadian women’s curling championships. Of course, we got free tickets to this event (finally a free ticket from Coke Regina). The night before, we briefly went to the Heart Lounge at the Brandt Centre, a party to celebrate the opening of the Scotties. A Regina rock band famous in the 80’s played throughout the night and booze was sold at the venue. After seeing what the Heart Lounge was all about, we watched Jumper at the Cineplex (not that good of a movie, I must say).
By 130pm on Feb 16, we were back in the Brandt centre to watch Draw 1. We arrived a little early to take advantage of a free lunch for the sponsors but we could not find the VIP room. On our way to our seats, Lou saw a co-worker of his and we sat beside him and his father. Curling was not as bad as I thought it would be. Lou explained the game to me and I quickly understood it (a lot easier to grasp than football!). It was fun to see the players strategize and sweep real hard to maneuver the rocks. Because we were really hungry, we did not finish the game. Oh, Lou’s co-worker said that the Eagles or Led Zeppelin will be holding a concert in Regina sometime this year. I hope we can get free tickets for that too :)
My husband and I haven’t had the chance to watch a live North American singer’s concert together (I went with my friend, Nona when I watched Mariah, Beyonce and Josh Groban). So when we got tickets to a Richard Marx concert, I was so excited. To top that, Iam an 80’s fan so Iam familiar with Richard Marx. The venue was at the Casino Regina. Like the casinos in Ontario, they regularly host singers in their Show Lounge (rarely do they host famous singers though).
The venue was jam-packed. Because Richard Marx was big in the 80’s and early 90’s, majority of the audience were mature :). The show lasted for 2 hours. He sang Hold on to the Night and Now and Forever acoustically. He played a lot of rock and roll songs and showed off his amazing guitar skills. Then he played 2 new songs with his keyboards. I especially enjoyed the part where he sang This I Promise you by NSync (he wrote the song). Not only did Richard Marx sing, he also communicated with the audience by making jokes and allowing the audience to take pictures of him (as per the casino, picture taking was prohibited). The last song of the night was of course, Right Here Waiting For You and everyone went nuts singing along with him - including me :)

The last two weeks were refreshing and fun. We thought there was nothing much to do here in Regina, but if you know where to look, entertainment is just around the corner.

Next, theater again on our wedding anniversary (Titanic the musical), a Broadway production in Saskatoon of Phantom of the Opera in May (to celebrate my husbands 30th birthday) and Cirque du Soleil in July (courtesy of Coke).

The Reality of Global Warming

Dear Friends,
Normally at this time of the year in Toronto, the ground is covered with snow and the temperature is between negative three to seven Celsius with strong cold winds. Winter officially began Dec 22 but currently we are experiencing spring-like weather.
Some people I know here are ecstatic of this spring-like weather but not me. Sure its nice and comfortable not to wear boots with wool lining, ear muffs and thick coats but its scary too. Its scary because my instincts are telling me that what is happening weather-wise is not normal. The unusual warm weather got me thinking and made me wonder, it made me ask questions and it made me realize that something is definitely wrong.
My questions were answered a few days before Christmas when I rented a movie by the former vice president of the United States, Al Gore. A movie called An Inconvenient Truth. A movie about the reality of Global Warming. Yes, folks this movie gave me answers about what is currently happening to the weather not only here in Toronto but all over the world.
Al Gore, clearly and scientifically stated that Global Warming is currently altering the natural state of our earth. It is currently the cause of various weather and climate extremes. It is currently the cause of death in humans, animals and plants, the disintegration of nature and the destruction of man-made structures.
Viewing the astonishing pictures featured in the movie was overwhelming but undeniable. Imagine a whole lake shrinking (Lake Chad in Africa) because of drought, beautiful and majestic glaciers melting (on Mt Kilimanjaro and at the Glacier National Park in the US), floods because of record number of hurricanes or typhoons, ice shelves falling into the ocean in Antarctica. Oh and polar bears drowning because the ice they call home is melting.
The reason that Iam posting this in this blog is to inform you about this movie, to encourage you to watch it and to encourage you to invite your friends and family to view the movie as well. Iam hoping that it will open your eyes to the "inconvenient truth" just like it did mine.
If you do not have the means to watch this movie (the DVD came out last November) please visit the website www.climatecrisis.net.
Thank you for your time and let us all work together to curb Global Warming!
Your friend,
Sharon Fusilero-CalambaInconven
